The main role of a rooster is to protect their flock, they will do this both in the wild or if you have backyard chickens. Roosters will make lots of noise and defend a flock of hens from predators and strangers. They also help keep peace amongst the flock by establishing a social hierarchy. They will often be at the top of the pecking order, which means they will be the first to eat and get access to the best nesting spots. This social order minimizes fighting and keeps the flock calm and cohesive.Â
