Cuvilly Arts & Earth Center’s “We-Cycle” program was designed in response to the issues of rising gas prices as well as dependence on and over-consumption of fossil fuels that are detrimental to humans and the environment.
We would like to encourage people to use their bicycles more, not merely for recreational purposes, but as an alternative mode of transportation.
Fancy clothes, an expensive bike or expert skills are not required. Our goal is to help riders feel comfortable, confident and safe on their bicycles, particularly in Ipswich, so that they are able to perform tasks and errands that they otherwise would use their vehicles for—i.e. light shopping, going to the bank or post office, etc.
Some of the ways we aim to carry out this goal is by:
- hosting local rides to give opportunities for people to get on their bikes
- offering alternative routes around town
- offering periodic bicycle workshops—maintenance, safety & skills and other bicycle events
- being a resource for those interested in using their bikes more—whether looking for parts or people to ride with, etc.—we’d like to help connect people with the things they need for riding.
Furthermore, we want to encourage the town and local businesses to become more “bike-friendly” by advocating for increased bicycle awareness and the creation of bike paths and lanes on busy roads, adding more bicycle racks around town and, perhaps, even offering incentives to patrons who use their bikes as transportation.
Cuvilly seeks to be a voice in Ipswich (and surrounding towns) to emphasize these issues. However, we know we are not alone in caring about this…
If you’re interested in this endeavor, let’s join forces and make it a community effort! Our voices together are much louder.
